Day 29 in Beijing

Day 29 in Beijing, the 13th of December 2009. Today us four (Jordan, Gerard, Josi and myself) are going to continue our group tour in the Happy Valley!!!!!

It's been so long since I last visited an amusement park. My first amusement park experience was in Hong Kong back in 1997; then it was the only time that I went to Rainbows End with my intemediate school (like 2001??). Jordan done some research about Happy Valley and started telling us all his tips with amusement parks. Apparently one of the rides in Happy Valley is listed as the top in Asia few years ago. It's been a very popular place in Beijing. Fingers crossed that this ride won't be closed today. There is a big Christmas tree in Happy Valley and we immediately got really excited about the upcoming Christmas. Really wish we can have a white Christmas this year =)

We finally got into Happy Valley, and obviously, PHOTO TIME! To memorate our first group tour together =) There were only about 20-30 visitors with us when we got our tickets, so looks to be a quiet day today. The theme figure posing for Happy Valley are a bunch of ants, so throughout the day, we see ants cartoon figures everywhere on the map, as well as human fitted into ant costumes (very ugly ones) and dancing around in the Happy Valley. There are 6 major parks opened already in Happy Valley and the 7th one is under construction. The parks include the Wild Fjord, Alantis, Aegean Harbour, Lost Maya, Shangri-La and Ant Kingdom (for kids). There are stories behind each of these parks and associated rides and decorations. But since all the scary rides won't open until at least 12pm we decided to go for the easier ones first: bumper cars (called Treasure Troops) and Big Straw Hats.

Treasure Troops (bumper cars)were so fun!!! The weirdest thing though, was the two 'guys' (like 30-ish??) in front of us which we were then competing against in the field. They are really weird, like in a way of mentally weird? They're at least aged over 30, but they run and scream like children; then they were sooooo wild on the field and crazy in trying to hit us as hard as they can. I really don't understand why are Bumper Cars so exciting that they have to scream like a little girl????????? The Big Straw Hats are really just like the tea-cup twirls in the Disneyland, something like that. That we sit inside mexican straw hats looking things and it'll start spinning and we'll 'scream' like we're scared and having fun. Lol. A good preparation for the real screams on the rides later though =P
After the bumper car and the strawhat rides we walked through the Ant Kingdom. This is a theme park designed for children but was unfortunately closed in the winter. Gerard and I saw these massive ants in the park and we started posing like them. There were a lot more further down into the park where Josi and Gerard also posed for. Haha, I guess funny photos will replace our dissappointment in the lack of facilities opening in Happy Valley =(
Energy Collector was one of the first facilities to open. It is the highest and largest platform, so called 'flight island', for sightseeing purposes in Asia. Visitors 'board' onto the Energy Collector driven by 'our pilot' and 'co-pilot' who were making jokes all the way on the ride. When the platform arose high in the air we can see all the different parks clearly and still right in front of us. This gives us a better idea of what's in Happy Valley. We even saw the construction sites of the 7th theme park. Due to the dull winter season and the high volume of dust in Beijing, Happy Valley looks very grey and dark and unlively, very much UNLIKE the description and drawing on the map =(
Our first exciting ride was the 'Energy Storm' inside Alantis park. This ride basically is by strong acceleration and rotation effects that brings to the passengers a feelings of being sucked into an energy storm, visually and physically. It's very attractive in Happy Valley and often became the first choice of many visitors before going onto the other rides. We sat into the double-seated branches off coming from a crane, locked up into our seats, then the cockpits will drive upper and lower turnovers to give us the storm effect, then with incredibly fast speed and double rotation trying to 'spin' us off. This is really fun! I love the super acceleration and the vertical and inverted rotations! Very stimulating =) But while we were being spinned around and turned upside down in mid-air, we saw some stuff dropping out from other passengers and hitting hard on the ground. When we finish, Josi suddenly ran to one of the staff who picked up those things from the ground and came back to us with a sad face. It was her camera that fell out from her pocket and smashed onto the ground. There are cracks on the side of the camera and is no longer responding. Feel really sorry for Josi =( But guess what?! Now you have a REAL excuse to buy a new camera, hehe.
Jungle Racing was the first small roller coaster ride we took in Happy Valley (sorry didn't take any photos, so had to use a pic from the happy valley website). I love roller coasters and I think this mini one is great appetizers for us. The ups and downs during the ride, the constant swings between two sides of the ride, a sudden fall after going against gravity and the little screams every now and then between falls made this little ride a little bit more exciting. The swings on the track were actually quite significant, for a few times Jordan and Gerard thought they'll hit their hand on the side walls (maybe just because you guys have long arms????).
The Apollo Wheel is the next and one of the best rides in Happy Valley (when a lot of other rides are closed). It is actually one of the more popular and famous rides in China theme parks as well as all over the world. It's built on the lake inside Happy Valley, and during winter the surface of the lake is completely frozen (couldn't take a far enough photo so took one from the happy valley website, which is a photo taken in the summer). This is the largest pendulum in Asia and is one of the five latest and best amusements by the 2004 American "Entertainment" magazine remark. This is a massive, MASSIVE monster. It gives off these giant rotate and spins off in a 15-storey height mid-air. The rotation plus the speed gives me this biggest butterfly in my tummy and it's like free falling whenever we come down from the highest point!!! Just by looking at it makes some people sick and scared. Josi didn't really want to ride for the first time and kept on resisting to come on board with us. Eventually we convinced her that it's a team experience, lol, and here we go!!! We were yelling soooooo loud and high and bad when we were swung between two sides of the pendulum!!! But it is sooooo much fun!!!! I love it~! If we have free time this afternoon I want to ride it again!!!!

After Apollo Wheel, we decided to take a break and have lunch (and wait for the real rides to open). There are not too many options available in Happy Valley and every available food 'place' seems to be quite empty and offering similar food (doesn't look tasty at all). Eventually we decided to go to the 'biggest restaurant' in Happy Valley, which is really just some stalls selling food with customers sitting in the open space. I ordered a beef noodle soup, which surprisingly, with hand-made fresh noodles made right in front of me. The soup was really just bland with one slim slice of beef, but I like the hand-made fresh noodles very much! We each got a corn as well, and to our dissappointment, it's not like the juicy sweet corns we have in New Zealand, but rather it's the chewy, dry, tasteless Chinese corn =( I know Chinese like these type of corns, but maybe it's a bit too tastless for us =( The restaurant is right at the bottom of Apollo Wheel, so throughout our lunch we can hear people screaming and yelling like they're being slaughtered or something. I couldn't stop thinking, 'omg, did I sound like this too?'. Really isn't the best background music for eating=P

The afternoon is where most of our fun happens and OMG!!! I love these rides. We first went onto the Crystal Wing in Alantis(waited in lines for like 15-20 minutes?). Crystal Wing is the only flying-coaster in Asia, and it's the largest amusement facility in China. THe uniqueness of this ride is that we are being hung onto the seats, like flying through the air, rather than sitting on our seats and riding on the tracks. We read about this ride, that so far there are only five roller coasters such as this in the world (being hung rather than sitting down) and Crystal Wing won the European and American track amusement championship for two consecutive years in 2003 and 2004. Imagine this, we were hung in mid-air, with our body facing down, facing the earth, with a thought in our minds 'what if the seat belt broke, then we'll hit the ground with our face first'. This is not the end of the uniqueness!!! Crystal Wing's tracks swings inside out and upside down, with 360 degrees rotation, as well as flying backwards and many more! We were really really really going against nature and gravity. It's soooo cool!!! I really really love this ride! We were screaming sooooo loud and making EB roll calls during our ride!!! EBs Hot to GO!!!!!!!! Wooooohooo~~ (such an awesome stree relief, hehe).
Most of the other parks and rides were closed due to the cold winter. Especially the Aegean Harbour!! We really wanted to ride this roller coaster that will smash into the water at the end, but because all the water are now frozen into ice, so the rides were all closed =( Aegean Habour have the best archiecture styles, in my opinion. It used a lot of the style and ideas from the Aegean Harbour, like its name suggests, with a lot of Greek style buildings and scenary.
But nonetheless, we really had so much fun just walking around and taking random photos, meaningful photos, pretty and funny photos, scary photos and many more! (like me standing on a frozen river) It's enough just being able to be together and really spend a quality day together. Me love~

The four of us went back and took another ride on the Apollo Wheel after going through a not-scary-at-all ghost house. Although it's not scary, but it did manage to make me scream like, once, haha, because the ghost-pretender suddenly hit the drum when I walked pass. LOL. Apollo Wheel is definitely recommended~ I really like it! It's much colder in the afternoon when the sun is setting so our second ride was so much colder. Jordan and Josi decided not to go onto the Crystal Wing again but Gerard and I are still really really keen! We went back again and ended our Happy Valley tour by taking the last Crystal Wing ride. 4pm is when the rides stopped and let's go home =)

Tonight we decided to stay home, make some nice warm home food and relax with a movie =) Such a nice feeling to just be with friends and relax at home~~ <3

Day 28 in Beijing

The full four weeks of my Beijing journey. 12th December 2009. Firstly wish Francy a lovely birthday, happy birthday francy!!~~

Since I was little, I always had one tradition to celebrate my birthday. In my family, we don't do cakes or parties or songs or presents. But since little, my parents will always agree to one request from me. They know I'll ask the same thing every year, and it'll be the best day of the year for me. I stopped that tradition ever since I moved to New Zealand, but now it's a chance for me to pick it up again, hehe, just for fun. What is my tradition? Since young, I'll ask my parents if they can take me to the zoo for my birthday. I love the zoo. Not so much of the fact that the animals are being caged, but because that I love animals~ hoho, i wanna see animals~~So today, hehe, making my little dream come true again, I asked if it's possible for us to visit the zoo this weekend. This is the only weekend that Gerard can get off work (as far as we know) and it'll be great if we can all go together. Gerard really likes the zoo too, so here we go!!
After we got off the bus at Chaoyangmen, we first bought some snacks and bread rolls as our lunch. Hoho, this is a new place that we found, they have a really awesome Taiwanese fried chicken here (6RMB per bag), it's sooo good. Then we took the subway to Xizhimen (our landlord told us to get off here). After we got out from Xizhimen, we realised that it's actually one station too early to the Beijing Zoo, there's actually a station called Beijing Zoo station. But luckily we got off early, on our way walking towards the zoo, we found some more cheap and tasty food places. This is such a long journey to the zoo, we each bought some steam buns, each for like 75cents RMB each or something, soooo good~!!!

Finally here we are: Beijing Zoo! It's the winter season right now so ticket is only 10RMB per adult. After we got the tickets, here we go! There were not too many people waiting in the line for the zoo tickets, or maybe we were just too late =P After we got in from the main entrance, we first found the Beijing Zoo tour map. What are we going to see first? The national animal of China = Panda!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pandas are kept in a special building. There's actually extra ticket that we have to buy to be able to get in and see the pandas. At first we thought it's quite ridiculous how they didn't say so at the main door, but then we thought about it, yeah, pandas take extra effort to be fed and maintained, and we really want to see the pandas, so...pandas here we come. There are few halls/buildings inside the panda garden. At first we saw the little red pandas, they're cute but not as exciting for us. Then we turned to see the real giant pandas, the black and white ones. Due to the cold weather a lot of the animals are actually kept inside the building rather in outdoor. By the time we saw the first panda, it is actually outdoor, but ASLEEP!!! (see photo) It's sleeping while sitting there, funny huh??? It was just sitting there and fell asleep!! It was soooo cute~!
We continued to walk further and saw a few more giant pandas. But maybe it's the timing (after lunch for the pandas) or it's due to the weather (winter), all the large size pandas we saw outdoor were dozing off to their dreamland. There's this particular one that I must talk about: this one panda sleeping on its side on a platform, Jordan and I suddenly realised that this panda is pooping!!! It's sleeping and pooping at the same time. LOL.
After finishing see the large pandas outdoor, we walked into this exhibition hall called the Olympic Pandas. I heard about this. There were 5 young pandas selected to represent the five rings of the Olympic symbol. These 5 pandas are younger and smaller. They were kept indoors. As we walked inside, these pandas are actually enjoying their lunch (with bamboo leaves). They're really playful, munching and playing with each other at the same time. I was really lucky to take this photo (see below) of the panda that happened to turn around and looked into my camera, hoho, so happy!! Pandas are really chubby and really slow, (well not THAT slow). Their kinda inproportionate body size and fat made them really wobbly while walking, hehe, it's really cute and funny.

After we got out from the panda garden we continued to explore the Beijing zoo. We had a few things in mind that we really want to see today. Like canines, elephants, giraffe (I was even wearing a giraffe top for today), hippo and rhino, bear, lions, tigers, monkeys etc. We first turned to find the monkeys.

All the different types of monkeys are kept inside cages, they were really lively and moving around all the time. Some of the monkeys are even responding to the teases from other tourists. We got really upset with some of the tourists around because they're throwing food and snacks over the top of the cage and feeding these animals. This is really annoying! There were large signs EVERYWHERE asking tourists and visitors NOT to feed animals because it's unhealthy for them and could bring danger to the animals. Tsk Tsk!! This is upsetting!
We found some really interesting stools outside one of the toilets in the zoo, it was stools for little kids decorated with animals legs. Hehe, it was soooo cute! Today I'm REALLY into giraffes, haha!!! I love it~~ so I picked the giraffe seat with my giraffe shirt, hoho, me so happy!~ I saw some visitors holding this blown-up toy shaped as a giraffe and I was so excited!! Me want!!!!! Jordan bought one by surprise and we had so much fun playing around with it. There were numerous times where I was just holding it, turned around and the giraffe head hits Josi, lol, sorry >_< id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5418384701021761218" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 400px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRzLpCbeeJgBQ_LeQxCuxPlMK9CERQ2KaoFzjRcWnRHn7KdZtT4v53TsddlUAovEA-ibTdPJQA0l6p_euRohvW-EgwEoDpJEsmqmN2DVUKPUwPVux_KYXSXBcRurVP6XI4tygNntwElnjX/s400/DSC00823.JPG" border="0">
After we got out from the toilets the boys saw this rock thing outside, suddenly Jordan suggested that we'll be 'wild animals' and pose for some photos. LOL!!! What kinda idea was this? Well I guess it make sense, 'wild animals' for the zoo, lol. At first I was really hesitant in posing, but then Josi said that we can just be cute animals, hehe, me love~ The boys still posed for some wild animal look; and the girls posed for some cuter ones. But why am I so huge compared to Josi? LOL.

We spent the whole afternoon in the zoo until it closes at 5pm. We walked through several different parks and gardens inside the zoo. We saw wolves, foxes, and all sorts of canines. In the 'Big Cats' section we saw tigers and lions, also cheeters, leopards, etc.
While we were walking through the massive parks towards our next destination (elephant) we saw this GIANT lion-shape rock! It was so massive and took us a long time to find an angle that will fit the lion into our camera lense. The zoo was really nice and big, the only thing is just that due to the winter season, a lot of the parks were closed and some animals were kept indoor inside cages, rather than allowing them to walk around outdoor in the 'open cage'. It was a pity and really sad to see that these animals were kept inside small, smelly, metal cages, but what more can we do? It's such a dilemma =( I decided not to post some of the photos I took of animals inside cages onto my blog, really don't see the need to make myself or anyone upset =(
What's really interesting and exciting for us was what we saw outside the elephant park. HOHO!!!! There were around 10 elephant statutes made of rocks outside the park. Kids were climbing the elephants, and some were being lifted and placed on top of an elephant statute by their parents for photos. We decided that we'll be children this time and take funny photos too.Jordan was posing on this really tall elephant statute that he needs to run before he can jump onto the elephant, soaring into the sky like a giant, roooooarrrrrrr. Gerard was being rather careful and make sure that he holds onto the elephant ears tight (but pay attention to the little kid at the elephant feet, haha, this is Jordan's favourite photo. While we were taking this photo, the little kid wobbled towards the elephant and starting hitting the elephant feet, like he was strong enough to push the elephant over, sooooo cute!!!) Josi was a little scared when she got picked up by Jordan and Gerard and placed her on the back of the elephant (and was even worse when she had to sit on the head of the elephant later for our group photo). I was just being me, smiling the same way like any other photo, lol; but it was actually really hard to get onto the elephant because it was really tall for girls. We tried really hard to squeeze everywhere onto this massive elephant and actually find someone who knows how to take photos (rather than chopping parts of us out of the camera screen, or not taking the elephant at all, lol). We really love these photos but guess what? After we got off we saw a sign on the grassfield nearby saying 'no climbing onto the elephants', LOL!!!! Oops..... hehe we just followed others >_<
Our zoo tour finished after visiting the reptiles section and when the zookeepers are starting to shuffle people out. We didn't even realise we were walking out of the zoo >_< seen ="(">

After getting out of the zoo, we crossed the road to this massive building so called 'Beijing Zoo Markets'. We were really interested about this place because when we told Anson's mum and our landlord that we're going to Beijing Zoo, their first reactions was 'to the actual zoo or to the market?'. Apparently the beijing zoo market is a place for really cheap things and it's a place where wholesalers will distribute their products. We got there at around 5pm but unfortunately it was closed around 6pm so we only had little time to walk around. Just within the limited time we were actually quite efficient. I bought a beanie for 25RMB, Jordan bought a Adidas bag, and the most amazing one: Gerard bought a pair of Nike! With Jordan's help, they managed to haggle the price down to 65RMB, hoho, it was sooo cheap and quite a good quality too! The shop owners got really pissed off at how Jordan is 'helping foreigners' and kept on saying 'why are you helping others not helping your own people' to Jordan. We quickly left after paying for the shoes to avoid further comments and potential conflits. Scary >_<

Dinner
We met up with Anson (my family friend, who I introduced into AIESEC last year and now a hardout AIESECer, hehe, so proud) for dinner before going to the AIESEC party later tonight. Since the party is going to be at Wudaokou (the students populated area in Beijing) so we decided to go there for dinner. We were recommended by some friends before for a Brazilian BBQ buffet near Wudaokou at the price around 50-60RMB.

The Brazilian BBQ was really NOT brazilian. Firstly the buffet is only limited to the side dishes / drinks / snacks that are actually Chinese style. Each table (not matter how many people per table) gets one sheet of paper with a list of the BBQ roasts available in the restaurant. Then waitors dressed up as Texas cowbys (what the hell? Texas cowboys for Brazilian?????) will come around to the table, cross off of the selections on the list and cut off some roasts from the rods they're holding for the table. This is so called BBQ buffet??? Luckily it was quite cheap (to NZD) otherwise it will be really unworthy =( It was really fun to have Anson around, a naturally happy and funny person, hehe, made all of us laugh the whole night.
Tonight there's an AIESEC RUC party, somewhere around Wudaokou, and we're supposed to find the group. Karina and Jordan (the new Jordan) are both there as well. This new Jordan, Jordan Chong, was an EP from Karina's LC, from Otago Uni, and he's here in Beijing doing the same project as Karina and Kayne. Our Jordan and the new Jordan are actually friends since primary in Auckland, and lost contacts while they went to different schools throughout the past years. They only just got into contact before our Jordan left the NZ and found out that both of them are going on an AIESEC Exchange in Beijing. How lucky was this!!!!!! I always call them 'soul mates', lol =P We ended the night by visiting Propaganda, lol, what a place to return to again. PPG was still noisy, smoky and crowded as usual. When will smoking be banned indoor in China??? >_<
Tomorrow's going to be another big day for us four!!! We're going to Happy Valley Theme Park!!! Woooohoooo!!!!!!

Day 27 in Beijing

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me, happy birthday to Nancy, happy birthday to me =)

Today, the 11th of December 2009, my 22nd birthday. An usual day, a casual day, a lovely day. Thank you to you all for the loving and caring wishes. I am really happy to have met you all and have you here with me (thanks to facebook).

Firstly, thanks to my colleagues =) One of my colleagues was a leading cake baker in a hotel, and he promised to bring me some cakes made by him!!! WOooohooo, this is so nice of him~ My colleague arrived before lunch, with a butter cake, a rum and raisins cheesecake, and a mango mousse. Everyone at the office were so amazed at his ability and skills, and definitely all surprised at how tasty the cakes were!!! My colleague said that the dairy he used inside the cakes were from our company, mmmmm seriously, I think Fonterra have the best dairy in the world. The cakes were just tooo good~!

I met up with my closest friends in Beijing at Zhangzizhonglu subway station. I picked Nanluoguxiang tonight (before my on-the-spot decision of last night with Eli) and really just introduce the place to my friends and let everyone pick a restaurant. There are quite a few of us tonight, (again kiwi-domination). Just want to say thank you first, to Jordan, Josi, Gerard (who rushed to join us after work), Jian, Gab, Xiaofang, Wilson, Kayne (NZ EP), Karina (my roomy in conference) and Arturs. Thank you to Isa and Cuty (AIESECers from PKU) who joined us at the bar after dinner. It was a pity that Xiaoping, Marta, and another Jordan couldn't join us. But thank you for all your wishes =) It wouldn't be a perfect day without you guys.

Our dinner was at Fish Nation. It's quite a walk into the Nangluoguxiang. I read about this shop before online, it's apparently the only authentic fish 'n' chips restaurant in Beijing, the most authentic English style. LOL. I just suddenly had the idea of, 'what if, I have a kiwi-style dinner for my birthday alllll the way away from New Zealand? Wouldn't it be cool to celebrate my birthday by having kiwi-food in China?!' To my surprise, some friends tonight have never had fish 'n' chips before. Not because it's a kiwi-thing, but more because it's just deep fried battered fish and thick fries isn't it? LOL, i thought it would be pretty funny to have a kiwi-style birthday dinner in China, so Fish Nation it is.
I really enjoyed the dinner. It was nice to fish'n'chips again. It's been so long since I last had it back in Auckland anyway. I hope you all enjoyed it =) And of course, photo times are unavoidable, haha, and you know what else is unavoidable? crazy and funny photos!!!!! celebrating turning 22 with crazy photos~ woohoo!!

Day 26 in Beijing

Day 26 of my China journey. My last day of being 21, one more day and I'll step into the adulthood forever, lol, jokes. Well, age doesn't really matter to me anymore, 18 sounds so long ago, 28 sounds not too far ahead of me. Looking forward to my last day at age of 21.
Today something special will happen!!! Introducing: Eli!!!! Eli is the first friend I made when I started my postgraduate study in University of Auckland. She's German, but the interesting thing is that she flew to New Zealand straight from China. She graduated her bachelor in Germany and travelled to Jinan and Suzhou of China to study Mandarin and teach German. I was really lucky to have met her in July this year. Ever since then we've become really close friends. We always hang out together in Uni, studying 2 papers together, fighting the heavy loads of university work together, coffee together, getting angry and sad together. She's in China atm, visiting her old colleagues and her boyfriend (Shibaz) before going back to Germany for a white Christmas with her family. Then she'll be visiting her host parents in US before returning to NZ to finish her postgraduate study (with me, wakakakaka).
Interesting how we are destined to meet like this huh?? Two girls from two different ends of the world, German and Chinese; met at the beautiful country called New Zealand; became close friends; and now meeting up in China! We kept on saying, it's destined that we meet and become friends. It's just so cool!!!

She'll arrive today at Beijing and taking off to Germany tomorrow afternoon. It was a pity that we didn't arrange the time better, otherwise I could invite her to my birthday dinner. But just to be able to see her is already enough for me! Her boyfriend Shibaz will come with her, both of them will stay at our flat for one night. Just can't wait to see her =)

Eli arrived at Beijing station (just behind my work) at about 4pm, and I got off work a bit earlier. As soon as I saw her, we were both so excited! It feels like we were friends for years, so nice and warm to see her again. Shibaz was a bit tired and I really felt sorry for all the nonstop talking between the girls, haha, must be tiring and boring for him. I took them home first to drop off their luggage, so that we can go out for a little walk and dinner.

After considerations and discussions, I decided to take them to Nanluoguxiang. Jordan was home today so I invited him to come with us. I think Nanluoguxiang is a wonderful place. The ancient architectures, traditional cultures, interesting mixture of shops and many more were all the reasons why I suggested Nanluoguxiang. Especially the old Siheyuan (courtyard houses) are a specialty in Beijing, and with the reduction numbers of courtyard houses, I think it'll be great for Eli to see it.

Before coming to Nanluoguxiang, I did a little bit of research on Baidu (equivalent to Google in China). There are few very unique and interesting restaurants and bars in Nanluoguxiang. The first one we saw when we got there was Pass By Cafe. That's it, that's the one we picked on. The owners and creator of Pass By Cafe are a couple, and they were inspired by Tibet culture and food when they travelled there. They incorporated a lot of new ideas into some traditional food, western and eastern. The most famous dishes in Pass By Cafe are their Lamb Skewer Pizza and Gong Bao Chicken Pizza, both very typical Chinese-style dish but on a pizza; and also the wheatmeal milk tea (inspired by a drink the owners had in Tibet). I read online that sometimes the owners will bike to Tibet (for holiday etc) and sometimes will gather some loyal customers to go with them. How interesting?

I ordered a wheatmeal milk tea with entre salad of mango, papaya and chicken, garlic bread; then a large pizza with half lamb skewer and half gong bao chicken, to share with everyone. Jordan ordered a specialty pizza (literal translation from Chinese), with an English name called 'African pizza', lol don't see any association at all. This is a sweet pizza, mango, banana, curry and cheese pizza. Shibaz ordered spicy beef on rice, and Eli ordered pasta. This was a very relaxing dinner, we were all very relaxed and feeling lazy inside this warm and cosy restaurant. After dinner, we had a walk around the area and us girls finally had some time to catchup between ourselves. It was just so nice to see an old friend again, especially in another country, it made everything seemed extra precious.

Day 25 in Beijing

9th December 2009, Wednesday, the 25th day of my China trip 2009-2010 summer holiday! Yeah, so much for summer....summer back in Auckland, winter here in Beijing. Lol.

Today we're going to have a special dinner. It was organised by Peter. Peter was another AIESECer we have back in Auckland. He's in Beijing now visiting friends and family, and of course, a perfect chance for us to meet up again. Tonight he's taking us to this roast duck restaurant near Qianmen, he's been there with his family and highly recommend us to go there.

Finally saw Peter, at last. It's been a few weeks since he arrived in Beijing (actually he arrived at the same day as us, the 15th November). Peter still looks the same, still VERY smiley, still very happy, still very funny. As soon as we saw him, we all noticed the shinny jacket that he's wearing. It's a very Chinese thing! The down feather jackets here are mostly the shinny ones (in trend this winter), haha, and Peter pulled it off really well!!

The restaurant is well off the main streets. We walked about for at least 20 minutes before we finally arrived at the restaurant. It's just normal looking, no fancy decorations, doesn't look any particular good or inviting. BUT!!! wakakakaka, this is probably one of the happiest and best dinner we all had. We ordered 2 Beijing roast ducks (with the rice wrappers and vegies and sauce), vegies, pumpkin chicken, black pepper beef, some special chicken, duck bones (in special flavour), duck soup, many drinks, dessert and etc (can't remember, lol). Guess how much in came in total? 40RMB per person!!! There were 8 of us together tonight, Peter, Jordan, Jian, Josi, Gab, Xiaofang, Wilson and me. We were so full after dinner! It's unbelievable! I remember the roast duck I had at Liqun with my other friends were 198RMB per duck. But at this restaurant, it's only 48RMB!!! How unbelievable?! the quality and taste are definitely up in the rank too!!! Wooohooo!!! found an awesome dinner place~

After dinner Jian, Xiaofang, Wilson and Gab took the cab home. Peter, Jordan, Josi and I started walking slowly back to Qianmen for bus and subway. You know what? If anyone want to take a walk at the night, to relax, to chat, to hang out, to date, to see something amazing, you must come to Qianmen. The street at Qianmen just like in a movie. I don't know where else you'll be able to find something like this. The street lamps are all shaped in ancient Chinese designs. The lamps were fixed about 2m tall and shimmering weak white lights, this gives off a mysterious and art-like effect to all the buildings around. The misty winter night in Beijing adds the extra bit of mystery to Qianmen. It's like in a movie, in ancient China, like in an emperor-led dynasty. Quiet, calm, mysterious.

Really recommend people in Beijing to walk in Qianmen at night. Especially after all the shops are closed. It's just unblievable. (I purposely didn't use flash, so it adds the mysterious feel to the photo by adding a little blur up to the photo)

Day 24 in Beijing

The 8th day of December, 2009 = my 24th day in China. Today I'm going to Raffles City for dinner. Look at this!!! Christmas decorations in China (especially outside and inside of shopping malls) are really pretty. Especially darkness hits Beijing around 4.30pm during the winter, so these lights are just so pretty~ It lights up this cold and dull city, brings liveliness back to us, colourful and warm.

Today Jian (took the photo of him by surprise, lol) and I are going to go out for dinner together. Jian and I are coffee pals back in Auckland. Never really got to know him until he left to Canada. My first memory of him was during my interview for AIESEC. Jordan and Jian were my interviewers. My first impression of these two boys were: serious. They were really serious and professional during the interview. But one last question really took away this adjective I had for them, haha, I remember the question they asked was 'if you can choose to be a cat or snake, what would you be?'. At that time, I was thinking, 'what da hell is going on with these two boys?' But since they look so 'serious', I shall take this question seriously. After some thought, the answer that jumped out from my mouth even surprised myself. I answered, 'Dog'. Random huh? Well, I guess that's how our friendship started, random but nice.

Jian left to Canada last year for his study exchange, then he stayed there a bit longer for his job. Now he's back with us in New Zealand, and going to start his graduate job at Westpac NZ from February 2010. Everytime we meet and catchup, we always choose cafe. Jian likes long black, I like latte. He drinks slowly, one sip every now and then. He sits there quietly, listen to all my rant. He laughs with me loudly, with all those jokes and random comments. He's always there, supporting me.

Tonight's dinner was just so nice. It's been so long since we last had a chat. It's quite hard to have real catchup times now. Especially with the technology advancements, we just think that we'll keep in touch via emails and texts or something. But to be able to sit down and enjoy some 'real human' time is something I treasure, especially with my closest friends.

Jian knows me well. As soon as we sat down (after picking Bali Thai as our restaurant in Raffles City and Jian making the menu decisions), he asked one simple question, 'so how are you?'. That's really enough for me to open the flood gate and talk about everything. Updates about me, updates about him, the night was too short. Jian was too kind. He bought me dinner for one reason, a special day in a few days time for me. Thank you Jian.

Dinner tonight was casual, slow and warm. We had a full table of dishes, and both of thinks that Bali Thai was actually quite authentic! Recommend =) We talked about university, career, relationship, Beijing, Auckland and the list goes on. The more I talk to Jian, the more interesting things I found about him. He's actually much more funny and loud that what usually people perceive him to be. He's very caring and pays a lot of attention to details. The amount of effort he put into relationship (love, friendship and family) are amazing. Feel glad for his future girl, for finding someone perfect =)

After dinner Jian took me to a dessert shop. This is actually the main goal of tonight, and it's the place that he planned to take me to, then we realised, we need to have dinner first, lol. The dessert shop is also in Raffles City shopping centre, it's called Honeymoon 满记. It's the most popular and famous dessert shop in Hong Kong and now it's expanding into China. The most popular ones are like mango sago, durian desserts etc. They all use fresh fruit in the dessert, sweet and healthy. Jian picked grassjelly with sago, and I picked fresh mango with glutinous red rice and sago, and together we shared a mango & cream glutinous balls. There are just no words I can think of in describing these desserts. It's just too amazing, too good, too tasty, too unbelievable, too memorable. It's sooooooo amazing. The price ranges from between 10-30rmb, but one bowl like mine (Mango with glutinous red rice and sago, 28RMB) was way more than enough to fill you up. But!!! It's not toooooo sweet to be unbearable. The mixture of the coconut taste sago with red rice and fresh mango are just perfect!!!~~!~!~!~ I just can't stop kissing my finger tips and say 'perfect', haha, it's sooooo good!!!

Thank you Jian. For a memorable night. Will miss you heaps when you leave Beijing on the 20th December (so soon.....>_<) and can't wait to catchup again in Auckland!!

Day 23 in Beijing

7th December, my 23rd day in China. What's so special about today? I'm going to see a piano performance today!!!!! Remember I bought the 780RMB ticket few weeks ago? Omg!! It's today! It's Lang Lang!!

Lang Lang's concert was held in the Chinese National Opera House. Jordan and I arrived at the opera house at around 7pm, just in time for us to get in, have a look around the theatre, and get ready for the performance at 7.30pm. The performance will be held in the musical performance theatre, it's a smaller theatre and solely for orchestral performances.

Tonight was the first performance for the 2010 The 200 Years of Chopin series. This serie is to celebrate and memorate the 200th year of Chopin's birthday. 14 top pianists from 7 different countries will be performing Chopin's music in the Chinese National Opera House throughout the year until end of 2010. Lang Lang was chosen to be the first pianist and to officialy open the series.

As soon as we walked into the National Opera House, we were amazed at the amount of people (well, of course). What I love the most is the interior design. Extremely dome shaped tall ceilings made of glass, side walls made of red wood, marble floor, what more can I say? This is GRAND. This is breathtaking.

The inside of the musical theatre was mostly decorated by wood. All the seats are quite small and therefore wasn't very comfortable. The centre of the stage was for the orchestra and Lang Lang, surrounded by hundreds of seats for audiences. I started to look around at the audience. I can say at least a good third or even half of the audiences are children and teenagers. Some of the children are only led by one parent. That immediately reminded me of some comments I heard before. Chinese parents will try their best to inspire and motivate their children in excel in what they do. If the child is playing piano, then the family will try very hard for the child to go to performances like this, hoping for the biggest inspiration for their child. Sometimes the expensive ticket prices may mean that only one parent will go with the child, or even none. At the end of tonight, I realised the two boys sitting behind me, were exactly like what I was told. They were here alone, no parents next to them, but when they walk out, I realised the parents were outside, waiting.

Tonight's performance began by China National Orchestra. Lang Lang came out (finally) from the second piece. Lang Lang began performing 'Polonaise A Major' by Chopin; then the Third Perlude of Opera NO.13 by Liszt; Lang Lang played the Andante spianato & Grande Polonaise, Op 22 before the break. After the break Lang Lang performed the Piano Concerto No.1 by Chopin.
To be honest, the design of the interior of the theatre was quite appauling. I really could've enjoyed more of Lang Lang's performance more if the interior designs were better? What do I mean by that? Basically the stage for performers and musicians are in the centre of the theatre, surrounded by audiences. However because the stage was so far below the seats of audiences, the sounds are basically blocked by the first few rows of audiences and the music couldn't go expand throughout the theatre. The performance was therefore rather confined and closed within the little stage, the tall ceilings and open spaces really withdrew the grand effect of transferring sounds inside a theatre. Dissappointed.
